GHALAMKARI PANT
GHALAMKARI PANT
Ghalamkari, an ancient Iranian handicraft, involves the art of designing and painting intricate patterns on cotton cloth using wooden hand stamps. Originating during the word ‘ghalam’ means pen and “kari” means craftsmanship. Ghalamkari traces its origin back to the Sassanid period (224 - 651 CE), marking an ancient tradition that later flourished during the Safavid dynasty, particularly in Esfahan, the capital of the kingdom at that time. The esteemed tradition of Ghalamkari symbolizes the endurance, affection, and resilience of an ancient craft passed down through generations. Despite facing peaks and troughs throughout history, it persevered thanks to the dedication of artisans who safeguarded its legacy. However, in recent times, this tradition has faced stagnation, highlighting the importance of continued support for Ghalamkari artists to ensure the preservation of this cherished heritage.
